Orthodontic Emergencies: Handling Unexpected Situations with Ease

Orthodontic emergencies are rare, but in case they do occur, it’s important to know how to handle them. At Allen Orthodontics, we’re here to guide you through any unexpected situations that may arise during your orthodontic treatment. Follow our tips below to address common emergencies and contact us immediately to schedule an appointment for prompt assistance.

Sore Teeth and Irritation: Finding Relief and Comfort

It’s normal to experience some soreness or irritation after orthodontic adjustments. Here are a few suggestions to alleviate discomfort:

  • A man with his face covered in a warm washcloth to soothe soreness. Use a warm washcloth or heating pad on the affected area to soothe soreness.
  • A person pouring warm salt water into a glass for rinsing and promoting healing. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to promote healing.
  • A woman is holding a bottle of acetaminophen to manage pain. Take over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen (avoid aspirin) as directed to manage pain.
  • A woman with braces on her teeth, experiencing discomfort and irritation on her tongue and cheeks. If the wires are causing irritation to your lips, cheeks, or tongue, we will provide you with orthodontic wax to place on the braces for added comfort.

Loose Wires: Temporary Solutions and Prompt Repairs

If a wire becomes loose, follow these steps:

  • Try using a tweezer to carefully guide the wire back into place.
  • If the wire remains loose, you may use a clean fingernail clipper to trim the wire behind the last secured tooth.
  • Contact our office immediately to schedule an appointment for wire repair.

Poking Wire: Relieving Discomfort

If a wire is poking or causing discomfort, you can try the following:

  • Gently push the wire down using a clean pencil eraser to relieve the poking sensation.
  • Apply orthodontic wax to the wire to create a barrier between the wire and your soft tissues.
